A toast is not a speech, it's a celebratory offer of congratulations and success for the new couple. The toast should be five to ten minutes, tops. After that, most people are getting bored and let’s be honest, they are there to celebrate, which means drinking, eating and dancing. Not listening to you go on and on.
Usually, people record the toast on video, and anyone else who wants to can do it on their cell phone. To create a truly memorable toast for the new couple, follow these suggestions.
1- Find out a few specific things about them, where and how they met, a funny story about which one you are closest to and share a humorous anecdote about them. Explain to the crowd how you met, how many years you have been friends. If you are a family member, you can tell stories of your son, daughter, brother, or sister. Be kind.
2- Now you have the information, it’s time to put the toast in order and have an opening, body and conclusion. You can open with the funny story about them or use a quote that has to do with marriage. The quote can be a bible verse, a saying from one of your favorite philosopher's, celebrities, motivators or speakers. The body is where you will present the information which you have compiled, then the closing.Close with a hearty congratulation, wishing them outstanding success as they begin a new road and family.
3- Notes. Nothing fancy, a sheet of paper, yellow legal pad is good using black letters. The yellow paper enhances the black letters, making it easier to read. You can also use 3x5 cards. Be sure to number your notes to keep them in order and in case you drop them.
4- Practice, practiced practice. Rehearse your toast in the mirror and watch yourself as you practice. Having someone video it is most helpful because you can see how well you did and what to add or delete. Practice is the key and do it as many times as needed until you know you know it. This is what I tell all of my students. It doesn’t matter if you’re giving a toast or a two-hour presentation practice is essential. You are going to be awesome and bride and groom are going to remember your words for years to come.
